Shortlisted at DocNYC, this is a tragic and beautiful documentary short focusing on Moath al Alwi, a detainee at Guantanamo who has been imprisoned for 20 years without charge, and the intricate art he is able to create from scavenged materials. Director Dara Kell: “As nationalism and authoritarianism rise around the world, and crackdowns on freedom of expression increase, we believe in the value of creating a series that focuses on the beauty of artistic expression in many forms, and sheds light on the vital role that art has in celebrating and preserving our shared humanity.” A Ship From Guantanamo is nominated for Best Documentary Short.
